Fitness Systems - METS
What is METS? ....................................................................... MET stands for the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) or simply, metabolic equivalent. It is a physiological measure that expresses the energy cost of physical activities. Caloric consumption will vary from person to person when doing an activity due to different facors such as sex, weight or the proportion of muscular mass in the body. For example, a large, tall man climbing stairs will burn more calories than a small woman. Since the metabolic equivalent (MET) is a measure of intensity and rate, it can be used to quantify the total amount of physical activity in a way comparable across different persons and types of activities. One MET corresponds to the base metabolic rate of a person while sitting quietly, or roughly 1 kcal/kg per hour. Strolling leisurely corresponds to about 2.5 METs, brisk walking at (5.5km/h) comes out to roughly 3.5, jogging is rated at 7.0 and rope jumping at 10 METs. In this way, METs can be used to monitor physical activity levels to get an indication of the aerobic intensity and order of magnitude of energy expenditure for a specific activity. In order to stay fit and healthy, you should engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity (between 3 METs and 7 METs)for at least 150 minutes a week (or about 30 minutes almost every day). For maximum health benefits, this exercise should occur in continuous bouts of at least 10 minutes.
The new Ultima METS helps you monitor your physical intensity (METs) while you walk. UltimatePSM is now working on a new pedometer that will calculate the intensity of your exercise using METs - this pedometer will provide a far more accurate calorie burn counter than any other pedometer and will be an exceptional training tool for those who want to get fit and stay fit. With Ultima's unique METS feature, you will know exactly how intense your walking is and will be able to adjust your exercise accordingly. Make sure you accumulate the full benefits of aerobic activity. Measure how much of your weekly walking is spent in your ultimate fitness zone with ULTIMA's unique METS feature. *************************************************************************************************************** The detailed description for the UT- METS series pedometers are as follow: 1. UT-618 METS G Sensor Pedometer use the brand new IC version that comes with eight functions ( step, distance, calorie, clock, speed, 7- memo, exercise time and METS timer). 3. UT-819 METS G Sensor Pedometer use the brand new IC version comes with 9 functions ( step, distance, calorie, clock, speed, 7- memo, exercise time, METS timer & USB). How the METS works : The activity consumption calorie, the effect calorie burn will need more exercise strength MET is a index to the exercise strength. More MET value more strength 1 MET = 1 KCAL / (Kg x hour) For example: one man weight is 70 Kg walks at 3.5 METS constantly, and keep walking 1 hour, then the calorie burn 3.5(METS)*70(Kg)*1(Hour) = 245 KCAL, So more higher METS more calorie burning at fixed exercise time. For effect exercise effort to burn calorie, the METS need to over 3 When METS is over 3 , the METS time will counting, if METS is below 3 then time stop. The METS time indicate how long the effective calorie is burned. METS fieness system ( for more information, please see the ULTIMA website as follow: ) http://www.ultimatepsm.com/METS.html |
